Local Notice to Mariners now available electronically

Chesapeake Bay Magazine (2004)

In efforts to improve service and reduce costs, the U.S. Coast Guard recently stopped distributing paper copies of their Local Notices to Mariners (LNMs) and will now provide them to you for free via e-mail. In the past, each U.S. Coast Guard district provided paper copies of LNMs free of charge to any mariner requesting a subscription, however the cost of printing and mailing has increased prohibitively in recent years. Sending LNMs via the Internet is not only more cost effective, but also allows for quicker, more timely releases of crucial navigation information.

To download notices, log onto the Navigation Center’s Website at www.navcen.uscg.gov/ , scroll to the bottom of the page and under the “LNM & LIGHT LIST NOTIFICATIONS” section, click on either “Local Notice to Mariners” (to select LNMs for a particular CG District), or “sign up to receive automatic notices” to choose which district you’d like to automatically receive all LNMs for. Registration for the free notice subscription is fast and easy, but is not required to be able to download LNMs for any district.

Internet delivery of LNMs is part of a larger U.S. Coast Guard effort to integrate, improve, and streamline the collection and dissemination of all navigation safety information.
